Still Friends!

For those newcomers to Veronica Mars, the TV series - set in the fictional town of Neptune, California - followed Veronica, a high school student who helped her fellow classmates solve crimes. These cases ranged from petty to major offences such as rape and murder. On the surface what looked like yet another teen drama was actually an intelligent neo-noir that worked on so many levels.

Unfortunately, the show was cancelled in 2007, after only 3 seasons consisting of 64 episodes had aired, a potential movie follow up was always on the horizon. However after rejections from the studio, it was only last year that plans for a movie became official, after Rob Thomas (the show's creator) along with Kristen Bell and the cast of the TV series appealed to the fans in helping fund the movie. And help they did, with the $2m dollar target being beaten in a short amount of time. The donations reached an impressive $5m+ and the movie that fans were looking forward to finally became a reality.

A year after the Kickstarter campaign the movie has released and the question is, is it any good?

The answer to that question is a resounding yes! The movie is everything that fans could have expected from Veronica Mars; the dialogues, the interaction between Veronica and Keith, the main mystery and of course the love angle between Veronica and Logan. There are also small inside jokes to be found for returning fans along with references to events from the original series.

For new audiences however, I kind of got the feeling that the only way to truly enjoy this movie is to have prior knowledge of the characters and previous events. Although the main plot is novel, the interactions between the characters and the style of the movie would be a better experience if you have seen the show. But that does not mean you won't like the movie as a stand alone event, after all the creators have guaranteed that the movie would be accessible for new audiences who are unfamiliar with the TV series, and I would be interested in knowing what people who watched the movie and not the series thought of it.

At the end of the day, the movie opens more questions than it answers, but leaves off on a nice note, which will no doubt be reprised in a future sequel. For the meantime there are the novels to look forward to, which have been confirmed by Rob Thomas to be canon.
